Pre-K Readiness & Writing Workshop Objectives

At the end of the updated Get Set for School® Pre-K Readiness & Writing Workshop, you will be able to:

  • Plan your instruction based on the developmental stages for drawing and writing readiness
  • Learn our unique approach to effectively teach coloring skills, and a correct and effective crayon grip with singing and modeling
  • Promote capital and lowercase letter recognition with music and hands-on play
  • Use Wood Piece play to teach size, shape, and position concepts for pre-writing as well as social-emotional skills
  • Build beginning habits for letter/number formation with multisensory letter play activities that teach social skills, body awareness, counting, and pre-handwriting
  • Identify how to use My First School Book to help children progress from tracing their letters and numbers to writing their names

  Pre-K Readiness: Social skills and the developmental stages of writing, hand skills, and crayon grip

  Alphabet Knowledge: Hands-on materials, My First School Book, capital and lowercase letter recognition
  Colors and Coloring: Crayon skills, developmental progression from scribbling to coloring and drawing
  Pre-Writing: Wood Piece play for capitals, multisensory activities for capitals
  Writing: Developmental teaching order, trace capital letters, write names, number skills, and formation
  Review and Resources: Review what you have learned, check readiness, additional resources for continued learning

At the end of our Get Set for School Pre-K Literacy & Math Workshop, you will be able to:

  • Use multisensory manipulatives that make concepts meaningful and easy to understand
  • Identify developmental sequence to transition Pre-K children easily from readiness to early literacy and math
  • Use hands-on strategies to teach syllables, names and sounds of letters, words linked to concepts, how to respond to simple questions, and how to have discussions and share ideas
  • Make number and math concepts relevant and fun with playful manipulatives, music, and rhymes as you teach counting, comparisons, sequencing, patterning, and problem solving

HWT K-5 Handwriting Workshop Objectives

At the end of the lively HWT Kindergarten-5th Grade Handwriting Workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the handwriting process and how to make it accessible and engaging for children
  • Plan exciting, active lessons to teach appropriate pencil grip and posture for writing
  • Understand the developmental sequence of handwriting
  • Use multisensory strategies, lessons, and practical ideas to teach printing and cursive skills that promote a love of writing
  • Understand appropriate use of handwriting assessments and data driven strategies to evaluate a student's handwriting abilities
  • Recognize common handwriting problems and apply simple, effective remediation techniques
  • Share the importance of teaching handwriting using current research, Common Core State Standards, and other standards

  Printing Capitals and Numbers: Preventing and correcting reversals, teaching strategies, looking out for lefties
  Multisensory Learning: Music and movement, Wet-Try-Dry, mystery letters, door tracing, digital teaching tools
